The country’s local authorities were honoured as Right to Read Champions at a special awards ceremony recently hosted by the LGMA.
Mr Seán Canney TD, the Minister of State at the Department of Rural and Community Development, presented Right to Read Champion Awards in recognition of the authorities’ ongoing efforts to support literacy development through the library service.
Right to Read is a national programme to promote literacy and reading development for Irish people of all ages and backgrounds. Launched as part of the Opportunities for All 2013-2017 libraries strategy, it currently includes four national programmes designed to promote children's reading and literacy:
- The Summer Stars Reading Programme;
- Spring into Storytime;
- Children’s Book Festival;
- Family Time at your Library.
Library services across the country are provided by your local authority. Library activity continues to grow – in 2018 more than 17 million visits were made to libraries and almost 14 million items were borrowed.
